What is the Driver CPC?
In order to drive professionally it is a government requirement that every 5 years you must complete 35 hours of periodic training to keep your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) to drive a lorry, bus or coach. Without a valid Driver CPC, you can be fined up to £1,000.
What training you need to do depends on what you want to drive, however for most UK drivers you must complete 35 hours of training through either a national Driver CPC training course or a mix of National & International Driver CPC training.
Initial Driver CPC vs Periodic CPC
There are two main types of Driver CPC depending on your circumstances. If you’re a new driver getting your HGV or PCV licence for the first time then you will need to complete the Initial Driver CPC.
The Initial Driver CPC involves theory tests and practical assessments. Once passed, you’ll receive your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which is valid for 5 years.
Past this, it is required you complete Periodic Driver CPC training every 5 years onwards. This involves 35 hours of training, which can be completed in one go or separated across the 5 years as long as it equals the 35 hours.

What are the Driver CPC modules for Initial training?
If you’re completing your initial CPC there are 5 key modules.
Module 1: Theory Test – Your Multiple Choice and Hazard Perception test. These test your knowledge of road safety and driving standards.
Module 2: Case Studies – A computer-based test that uses real-life scenarios, this focuses on applying knowledge in practical situations.
Module 3: Driving Ability – Your practical on road driving test, to assess your ability to safely control a vehicle.
Module 4: Practical Demonstration – The off-road test which covers vehicle safety checks, load, and security.

Vehicle Defects and Driving Licensing – Our Vehicle Defects & Driver Licencing training gives drivers a proper understanding of how to identify the checks to be completed on your vehicle. As well as identifying the coding system on a driver’s licence.
Do you need it?
The short answer is yes! Anyone driving for profit, whether that’s an HGV for work or paid minibus trips, must legally have their CPC. It is your own responsibility to check that your CPC hours are up to date, and if not, get the relevant course completed. You can check your CPC hours on the GOV.UK website.
