The government, along with the Department for Transport (DfT) have announced that they will be pushing forward with digital driving licences.
This means that anyone who holds a current UK provisional of full UK driving licence will also be able to access their photographic driving licence on an electronic device.
Expected to come into circulation later this year (2025), this new asset is going to potentially change the way the government can send and update and individuals’ information, while also offering an AI chatbot within the app in the future.
Benefits
This can be used as per you would use a real driving licence. Such as proof of identification in shops, pubs & other places. This will also allow you to prove your right to drive.
Digital documents will be secured, as you won’t lose licences or documents online, as opposed to a physical copy. The documents will be accessible via face recognition.
Science Secretary Peter Kyle said “…we are going to slash the time people waste dealing with annoying processes so they can focus on what matters to them.”

When Will This Be Available?
We can expect the new digital format to come into effect later this year. There are other suggestions, such as having letters sent online via an app on both iOS and Android.
It was said that the new app will “…offer a more convenient, and personalised experience of interacting with government.”
Other important documents and credentials, such as letter from the government, veteran cards & DBS checks will be given a digital alternative by 2027.
You can still use your current driving licence if necessary, and digital licences are not compulsory, so you don’t have to use the digital format.
