Earlier in 2023, there was an ongoing discussion about potential changes to the Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence Training, also known AS DCPC.
The plan outlined was to not scrap it, but to amend the training requirements around this to make it easier to complete as an employed, professional driver. The new government have restarted the process to get the legislation laid in parliament.
CPC Changes- Confirmed Dates
As of November 2024, the DVSA have explained the changes they are implementing from 3rd December 2024.
These changes are as follows:
- Introduction of a National CPC which will cover driving a lorry, bus or coach in the UK.
- Introduction of an International CPC which will cover driving a lorry, bus or coach in the UK and the EU
- New blocks of training for National CPC can be conducted in 3.5-hour sessions, rather than 7-hour blocks to allow more training flexibility for drivers.
Other changes are being pushed on 1st February 2025, which are:
- Reducing the time for those whose CPC has expired to return to driving through a 7-hour “Return to Driving” Module, then completing 28 hours of international or national CPC training within 12 months (if your CPC has been expired between 60 days and 2 years).
- Completing 35 hours of International CPC training before driving again in the UK and EU, or a combination of 35 hours of National and International CPC training before driving again in the UK

When can you expect these changes to be implemented?
As of 13th November 2024, the dates have been confirmed as mentioned above. Training providers will also be implementing these changes according to the dates of confirmation. If you have any CPC training booked prior to the 3rd December, you won’t need to worry about the changes. You can still complete the 35 hours of periodic CPC as is.
What should you do in the mean time?
You still need to complete 35 hours of periodic CPC Training in every 5-year rolling period. So, make sure you book your CPC training with 2 Start, the leaders in the logistics training industry.
Choose from completing your training at one of our training depots across the south, or book an online course, and complete your periodic training from the comfort of your own home.
Anyone who is looking to return to driving after letting their periodic training roll over are only required to complete the 35 hours of periodic training.
Once the dates pass, you will then need to adopt these types of training thereafter which fits within your needs (such as choosing national or international CPC).
