How to choose your career for LMCs

Gain Your HGV Licence

Before considering your career choice, you may first need to decide whether or not you actually need to complete your Category C driver training and licence acquisition.

This is because most, if not all, lorry mounted crane trucks are Class 2 vehicles. However, some LMCs are also Class 1 Category C+E vehicles, so don’t rule this vehicle Category out. You may want to complete your C+E licence acquisition, in which you are automatically given the Category C entitlement.

If you want to work as a LMC operator, chances are you will need to drive the truck to the locations work is being completed.

Complete your Lorry Mounted Crane Training

After you have either gained your Category C licence, or if you have decided that you will not need a Class 2 licence, you must complete some form of LMC training with an accredited provider. This is so you have covered all necessary legislations, regulations and procedures in place to safely operate a Lorry Mounted Crane.

Then, you will also want to consider what attachment you need a certification for. 2 Start offer courses for the brick grab, hook and clamshell attachments. You can choose up to three attachments to train on, depending on how many you will need to operate, which will broaden your scope of work you can complete. Other attachments can also be completed if you are completing training on your own equipment.

You can also complete training for tipper trucks too. Learning how to safely discharge a load off the back of the vehicle in a safe operating zone.

This can dictate the niche and specificity you wish to target within your job role. As long as you keep your LMC certification updated and your knowledge and skills refreshed (every 3-5 years), you can be confident that you will excel in your job role.

You can also complete Slinger Signaller training if you must direct a Lorry Mounted Crane operator. This consist of understanding the relevant hand gestures and movements, as well as having the knowledge to choose the correct restraint in accordance to the load material and weight.

Once you successfully complete your training and gain your certification, you can then put your training to use with your new career, and increase your earning potential.

Other Career Paths

LMCs are a gateway to other career choices within the construction industry. You can add more certifications to your catalogue and look at completing other training, such as operator training types (IPAF & PASMA training).
