Carrying dangerous goods for commercial purposes requires you to have a valid ADR licence. Also known as a vocational licence or certification, it is a necessity for professional drivers to obtain.
If you want to get your ADR licence, you need to complete dangerous goods (ADR) training. You can complete the relevant dangerous goods course as per your requirements.
ADR Core
ADR Core is a compulsory requirement to complete, as this covers the basic rules and regulations for the carriage of dangerous goods by road. This includes covering:
- Driver Responsibilities
- Documentation
- Rules, Regulations & Legislations
- Types of Safety Equipment
- Accident Procedures
The additional training modules you must complete will depend on the type of hazardous good you need to transport, as well as the classes they fall into & how they are transported (in packages or tanks).

ADR Packages
Packages will cover the transportation of hazardous goods moved & stored in different types of packaging. This will also consider specifications and compatibility for the packaging of the substance in question. 2 Start will teach you how to check the labels and packages, making sure they meet the requirements for ADR. You will also learn emergency response procedures relevant. If you transport these packages, or staff who are involved with handling packages, then you need ADR packages training.
ADR Tanks
Tanks training revolves around vehicles which carry dangerous goods in tanks. From what types of goods are transported and in what tank specification, to the cleaning procedures and the legal requirements for tanks, such as declarations. If you are responsible for either transporting, or loading and unloading dangerous goods from tanks, then you will need to successfully complete our ADR core, packages & tanks course.
Most ADR courses will include ADR core as a minimum requirement. Additional courses delivered by 2 Start may also include packages and/or tanks.
9 Classes of Dangerous Goods
Just like the three key modules, there is also 9 classes of dangerous goods which you can cover:
- Class 1- Explosives
- Class 2- Gases
- Class 3- Flammable Liquids
- Class 4- Flammable Solids
- Class 5- Oxidising Agents
- Class 6- Toxics
- Class 7- Radioactive
- Class 8- Corrosives
- Class 9- Miscellaneous

You can complete training for all classes, or choose which group you need to cover. Although, Class 1 & Class 7 are specialist classes, so 2 Start provide these as their own standalone courses, covered in one-day sessions.
2 Start offer Core, packages, & tanks training. Or, you can complete a full package which includes the specialist dangerous goods Class 1 (explosives) and Class 7 (radioactive material). You will need to complete the relevant training and exams and pass them to gain your licence.
Getting Your ADR Licence
After you complete your training, you will have to attend the exams for the components you have covered. These exams are built to test your knowledge in each component you have completed training for.
If you completed training for carrying hazardous goods in tanks, then you covered training for Class 3, you will complete one exam on ADR in tanks, then ADR for Class 3. You need to pass all relevant exams if you want to get your ADR licence.
Once you successfully pass the exams, you will then be sent your ADR licence, also known as your ADR Driver’s card.
However, there is more to getting your licence than completing training.
For example, if you want to become a petroleum tanker driver, you will also need a Petroleum Driver Passport (PDP). If you have this, you will need to complete refresher training and testing annually. This is separate to your ADR training and testing.
How long does an ADR Licence last?
From the day of receiving your ADR Drivers card, this licence will be valid for five years. You will need to recomplete training and pass the exams again to renew any time in the last 12 months of the licence validity. We normally suggest renewing before 6 weeks of your licence expiration. It will be under your discretion to update your vocational licence/certification if you will continue to transport dangerous goods.
