How long does it take to pass your HGV licence?

2 start vehicle fleet

If you’re considering a career in logistics, one of the most common questions for those looking to become HGV drivers is: ‘How long does it take?’

It’s a fair question, especially if you’re thinking of changing careers or want to get into work quickly. The good news is becoming a qualified HGV driver is often faster than some may think. IN many cases you can go from a complete beginner to fully qualified in as little as a couple of months.

In this guide, we’ll break down the full step-by-step process, realistic time frames for each stage and how soon you can realistically be on the road.

Step-by-Step Timeline

Step one is to complete your medical exam and obtain your provisional licence.

Before you can begin any training, you’ll need to complete the D4 medical examination to apply for your provisional licence. While getting your medical appointment is normally straightforward, the DVLA can be a little slow in getting the provisional sorted. Expect this stage to take on average 1-3 weeks, so it’s best to get this completed as soon as possible.

Step two is to revise and complete your HGV theory exams.

Next, you’ll need to both revise and partake in your theory exams. This includes your Multiple Choice theory test, Hazard Perception test, and CPC Case Study (if you plan to drive professionally). We recommend revising first and booking your tests once you feel ready!

Dependent on theory test availability, you can expect this part of the process to take 2-3 weeks.

Step three is your practical training and exams.

Once your theory is complete, it’s time for your practical training. During your training with us, we’ll train you ahead of both your 3a reversing test and 3b on-road test, both of which will be completed at our site. The training itself normally takes between 2-3 weeks, depending on experience and whether you’re training in Category C or C+E.

During your training, you’ll learn vehicle control, road positioning, reversing manoeuvres and real-world driving scenarios, making sure you’re test-ready. We book practical test slots in advance so you don’t have to wait for your test after training, this will all be completed together.

Total time to become a HGV driver?

If we put all the stages together from start to finish, you’re looking at at least a couple of months to complete your HGV licence.

As a general rule of thumb we say expect 3-4 months to give yourself time to revise for your theory exams.

What can slow the process down?

While the process itself is relatively quick, there are a few things that can delay it.

  • Waiting to apply for your provisional
  • Failing the theory or practical tests, so needing a retest
  • Limited theory test availability in your area
  • Needing flexibility with dates for your training.
