If you’re considering driving a minibus, whether for work, volunteering or even personal use, you may be wondering if your standard driving license is enough. The answer depends on a few important factors, including when you passed your test, the size of the minibus, and what you’re using it for.
What counts as a minibus?
The DVSA define a minibus as a vehicle with no more than 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8m, and a trailer up to 750kg. Anything larger is considered a bus and requires a different category of licence altogether.
Can you drive a minibus on a car licence?
In some cases, yes! However, there are a few conditions you must follow. To drive a minibus on your standard car licence, you must be over 21 years old, have held your driving licence for a minimum of 2 years, be driving for a volunteer purpose (not for work), and the minibus itself must not weigh over 3.5 tonnes.
If you passed your test before 1997, you may be automatically entitled to the D1 minibus category under grandfather rights. In this case, check your licence as you won’t need to undergo further training.

When do you need a minibus licence?
If you don’t meet the above requirements, then you will need to undergo your D1 licence training. This involves:
- A medical test to complete your D4 form
- Theory tests (both your multiple choice and hazard perception)
- Practical training and a driving test
This licence allows you to drive a minibus professionally and commercially for work.
Driving a minibus for hire or reward?
If you’re transporting passengers in exchange for payment or other benefits, you must hold the correct D1 licence and a Driver CPC qualification. This ensures you’re legally compliant and properly trained to carry passengers safely.
