Removal of Restriction
If you completed your category B (car) licence before 1st January 1997, you will have automatically gained a C1+E entitlement on your driving licence. However, this will be restricted to trailers that don’t weigh more than 750 kgs, with the total train weight of the vehicle and trailer cannot exceed 8250kgs.
If you passed your driving test before this date, you will still be required to complete a C1+E course and complete a test if you need to tow trailers that are over 750kgs. Once you have passed your C1+E test, you will then be able to tow trailers up to 4,500kgs, with the train weight of the vehicle and trailer being below 12-tonnes.
If you already have the category C1+E entitlement on your licence, you will still be required to go through the current licencing legislation in order to remove the restrictions on your licence. This will include completing a medical, applying for a provisional vocational C1+E licence, completing your theory tests (Multiple Choice & Hazard Perception). Once both parts of your theory tests have been passed, you can then complete your practical driver training and the 3a and 3b driving tests.
If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997, you will first need to obtain your category C1 licence before you can complete your C1+E. The process of gaining your C1 licence will also involve completing a medical, applying for a provisional vocational C1 licence, completing both theory tests and then moving onto your practical training and test.
*both parts of the theory tests need to be successfully passed at the same time in order for you to be able to move onto the next stage*
Why do I need a C1+E Licence?
Achieving a category C1 entitlement will allow you to drive any vehicles with a MAM between 3,500kgs & 7,500kgs, with a trailer up to 750kg.
If you want to tow a trailer over 750kgs, the next step from achieving your C1 licence is to obtain your C1+E which will allow you to drive any C1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kgs. However, the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer cannot be over 12,000kgs.
How can I obtain a C1+E Licence?
Students wishing to progress to Category C1+E will be required to send their Category C1 Pass Certificate together with their current U.K. Drivers Licence, to the D.V.L.A., Swansea to have the FULL category C1 and provisional category C1+E licence entitlement added before they can book a Category C1+E course and driving.
No additional medicals or theory tests are required. The duration of training will then depend on the experience of towing. We offer experienced instruction using our own vehicle or you may supply your own providing it fulfils current 3a and 3b driving test standard criteria.
What will I learn on this course?
Our C1+E Removal of Restriction training courses are designed to equip students with the knowledge to drive a vehicle and trailer safely. Students can expect to learn vehicle safety and how to perform the manoeuvres that will enable you to pass the DVSA test. Drivers will learn the following:
- Trailer safety, such a safe loading and driving
- Safe coupling and uncoupling of the trailer
- How to drive the vehicle and trailer safely on the roads.
