If you’re a newly qualified forklift driver looking to land your first job, you’ve probably noticed a frustrating pattern – many roles ask for 6 months to a year of experience. But how are you supposed to get experience if nobody will give you a start?
Here’s the good news: it is possible to get hired as a new forklift operator. You just need to know where to look and how to position yourself. These tips will help you get your foot in the door and build the career you’ve trained for.
A Good CV
While it might sound obvious, a good CV is often your first impression on the hiring manager. Your CV should be forklift-focused and show that you have invested time in getting your certification by showing a keen interest in the industry. Don’t try to hide the fact that you’re newly qualified, own it. What you lack in experience, you make up for in attitude. Emphasise your recent training, the types of trucks you’re licensed for, and the safety skills you’ve learned. Include your training provider and any standout feedback you received.
Look for Entry-Level or Temp Roles
Agencies and warehouses often take on temporary staff, especially during busy periods. These roles are ideal for gaining real-world experience and often lead to full-time work. Register with multiple logistics recruitment agencies and let them know you’re ready to get started ASAP. Keep them updated with your availability for any last minute roles too.

Be Flexible on Hours and Location
Being open to night shifts, weekend work, or travelling a little further can give you an edge. Once you’ve got that first few months under your belt, you’ll have more options to choose from.
Stay Sharp and Stay in Touch
Keep your licence valid and your knowledge fresh. If it’s been a while since your training, consider a refresher course or even shadowing a friend in the industry. Stay connected with others in the field, forklift work often comes through word of mouth.

Getting hired as a newly qualified forklift driver isn’t always easy, but with the right approach, it’s more than possible. Be proactive, show up with the right attitude, and take opportunities where you can, your experience will build faster than you think.
