The CPC theory test is in two parts which you can do either way round. You will need to complete an hour and 55-minute multiple-choice test which has 100 questions. You must achieve 85% in order to pass. The hazard perception test involves watching 19 video clips where you must identify 20 hazards. The pass mark is 67% and these tests need to be done within 2 years of each other.
There will also be 7 case studies to look at. You will have scenario-based questions developed by industry experts that are based on experiences drivers might have. There will be 6-8 multiple choice questions on the 7 case studies. It’ll last an hour and 55 minutes and you need to achieve 80% to pass. This will be valid for 2 years and you must complete your Driver CPC module 4 practical demonstration in this time.
Once your theory is complete you must do your practical. This involves vehicle safety questions, practical road driving and off-road exercises to demonstrate your abilities as a driver. It will last for an hour and 30 minutes.
The final part of the test will involve the learner showing different operations needed for a lorry driver, aside from driving. You will be assessed on safely loading the vehicle, prevention of trafficking illegal immigrants, the assessment of emergency situations and a full vehicle safety check.
Do I need CPC training?
This training must be completed if you drive a lorry, bus or coach for the main part of your job. If you simply enjoy driving as a hobby you won’t need to be complete it. All drivers who are driving vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, or with 9 passenger seats or more are required to do the Periodic/Driver CPC (as well as the initial where applicable) – 35 hours of CPC training every five years. Have a look at our full list of exceptions here.
You will receive your DQC qualification in the post and you must ensure it’s always with you to avoid getting a fine. This is also necessary if you are travelling to any EU country for work.
If your DQC is lost, stolen or damaged you need to let the DVLA know as soon as you can and apply for another one. You are still able to drive if your card has been lost however if you still haven’t received one after 15 days you need to make further enquires.
Brexit will not affect the Driver CPC legislation so all drivers must continue to follow regulations to avoid a fine.
